What we do at South Plains Brewing Company
South Plains Brewing Company was started by Jeffrey Scott Brown in 2012 in Malmö Sweden. The idea was to produce California style progressive craft beer in southern Sweden. Our first beer was an American Pale Ale, from an old recipe he had made as a home-brewer back in San Francisco in the 1980’s. It is a light amber, light bitterness at 41 ibu, and light dry hop. We followed with a West Coast IPA, a Black IPA called ‘The Burning Witches Brew‘ named after a hill in Kirseberg, Malmö where in 1504 they burned witches. We do a thick licorice Stout called ‘Used Motor Oil‘. Then we expanded to American Sour Beers under the brand name ‘Funkyland’. We have the Sour Blueberry, The Big Kahuna, Tree Hugger to name a few In 2020 we started craft distillation using the vacuum method and enhance flavors with industrial ultrasound sonification. The brand name is ‘Spirits of the North’. All can be found at The Green Lion Pub and some are available at Systembolaget such as; Apple Pie Moonshine, Gin, Jule Schnapps. Under new legislation called Gårdsförsäljning or ‘Farm Sales’ in Sweden, we hope to be able to sell our our products directly to customers at the brewery in the summer of 2025.

Hoppapalooza
Hoppapalooza is about bringing awareness to the local craft beer market in southern Sweden. The idea was, and it started in 2013, to have a beer festival with only locally produced craft beer, local musicians playing on a stage, and local food trucks. The idea has been immensely popular and has grown in a large following over twelve years. Hoppapalooza is always the last Saturday in July. In 2024, we had 28 local breweries, 4 local distilleries, had over a hundred local craft beers & spirits available, had about 5000 people and poured about 30 000 beers and spirits. There are no mass produced beers & no beers from the other side of the planet. The first thing we did at The Green Lion Pub was get rid of Australian, Japanese or American beers. I too love these beers and if I’m in San Francisco or Sydney I will always drink them but to get a beer from Australia to Sweden is a massive carbon footprint. No need to destroy the planet over a beer. At Hoppapalooza people will learn there’s a great lager in Tomelilla, or a great IPA in Trelleborg, or we have great Sour Beers here in Malmö. In 2025, it’s all about sustainability. Drink Local!!
